The Beauty of the Black and White Warbler

One of my favorite migrating birds is the black and white warbler. I think it's because they're easy to spot! I get all confused with the yellowish and greenish warblers that are flying through right now en route to their wintering grounds. They look so similar, but the black and white warbler stands out! At this time of year, the black and white warbler is heading to northern South America. What a long trip for a tiny bird! Be safe little warbler.

The black-and-white warbler is the only member of the genus Mniotilta, which means “moss-plucking” and refers to the bird’s habit of probing for insects. It you know what a nuthatch is, well, this bird behaves a lot like a nuthatch, creeping up and down tree trunks and along limbs while probing between bark fissures in search of insects and grubs. With unusually long hind toes and claws, these birds are well adapted to climbing on tree bark. Ya gotta love those ADAPTATIONS!

Interestingly, these warblers build their nests on the ground—at the base of a tree, rock, stump, or fallen log, or under a bush or shrub.

While still pretty common, black and white warblers are slowly declining in population mostly because of habitat fragmentation. And because they migrate at night, they frequently crash into windows, towers and wind turbines. Also as insect eaters, they are vulnerable to pesticide poisoning. To hear its beautiful song, CLICK HERE

Yessss, birds!I remember in fifth grade Ms. Friedman took the class birding and we got to see a black and white warbler! I wish I had the chance to study birds more often like before, but I am loaded with work. This wekend, I have four hw assignments, four more tests to study for, and they assigned us three projects and I have to write a report on a lab experiment we did in class. The experiment was comparing 50.0 mL of liquid in different pieces of glassware. We used a beaker, graduated cylinder, erlenmeyer flask, and a voluetric flask. We took all measurements of the glassware and made a chart of it and we measured the height of the liquid. Then after collecting that data in our notebooks, we got a big piece of paper where we had to draw and label the glassware and liquids in each according to the measurements. Now we have to write a report about it. So much work!!

And I'm gonna ask if I could go to Saturday Science b/c I really wanna meet you! The fifth graders at PS 230 will be really excited to see u I bet! :) And no, I havn't seen or been in contact with Sanjida after last day of school. I was on the bus once but saw her walking to the mosque but she didn't see me. & I'm hoping I could make it to UNC Reunion!Keep me up to date about any birds you see. Bye! ;)

It's so awesome to see you checking the blog. And this special bird is just for you. Listen Tasfiya....you are an awesome student, but make sure you take some time out from studies to enjoy yourself a little. It's very important to keep a balance in your life.

Thanks Ms.Seitz. And yes, I'll take time off. I can't be studying and doing work 24/7. That's why I'm trying to finish my homework early on weekends on Friday and a little on Saturday. So I have the rest of Saturday and all of Sunday off to do a little of the things I enjoy. The other day I got really excited because there were like 6 robins in my yard all at once. I was gonna take a pic or a video but I was too surprised to even move because my yard doesnt get any bird visitors that often. Hope you're doing well. And thank you for the advice, Ms. Seitz. You'll always be my favorite teacher! :)

Hahaha, I thought I missed it cause it wasn't in the November calendar for P.S.230, oh well, the 5th Grade Family Science was fun it's just that I came at the last 30 minutes cause none of my family wanted to go plus did you know......my mom is pregnant. So she didn't go so I just picked my cousin in law she said to say that and boy cousin in law. I liked that we did a Volcano at the end it was my first time. Also since we missed the lava lamp, Ms. Shelly gave each of us the supplies. After that, they said that we can plant dangdaliens? I don't know how to spell it!!!!! Well we planted them and left. I'm going to make the lava lamp tomorrow because I have guests over today, and my sister is bugging me to clean up things I will after I finish this. Anyways, did you know I got into this advanced reading program,I was surprised cause I'm usually bad at reading! I guess I'm better this year. Well bye, talk to you soon!!!!

Hi Minhaj, sorry for the late reply. It was nice to see you at science day. Did you get to make the lava lamp? That was nice of Shelley to give you the science supplies. And congratulations on getting into the advanced reading group. BTW, when is your mother's baby due? That must be exciting.
