Trip to Jamaica Bay

At the recent Sip Into Spring auction to raise funds for P.S. 230, I donated an afternoon of nature with Ms. Seitz to be auctioned off. The three lucky winners were Bethany, Ella, and Cameron and today we went out and explored Jamaica Bay, including the refuge in Broad Channel.

The weather was amazing, perfect really, and we saw lots of birds, including ibis, laughing gulls, tri-colored heron, tree swallows, ospreys, great egrets and cowbirds.

We also saw prickly pear cactus in bloom and milkweed covered in orange aphids. We found several diamondback terrapin nests that had been ransacked by raccoons that ate the eggs, leaving the leathery shells just lying in the sand. We saw more poison ivy than we wanted to, but it was very good that we kept recognizing it so we could stay far enough away.

The girls brought home some nature finds, including horseshoe crab shells, clam shells, snails, terrapin egg shells, and ribbed mussels. It was a great day!

So.... many....... BIRDSSSSS! My mouth dropped when I saw the pic of the osprey parents with their young! You saw so many birds I would love to see like ospreys and herons! I hope you guys had fun! Going out and exploring nature is one of the best, most exciting and most relaxing thing to do on an afternoon, especially with beautiful weather like yesterday's.

Anyways, I kinda miss UNC. It was an amazing year, so thank you Ms. Seitz! And thank you for everything you gave us, it's been a fun year and I always looked forward to after school. And thank you for making me become the big bird nut I am now. :) You'll always be my favorite teacher! Hope to see you at graduation. Now, me and Sharon the Hippo are going to go see the bird CD from that bird book you gave me. Bye!

P.S. Venus caught a fly! (That's the name I gave to the v.f.trap.)

It looks like so much fun! Did you see any other nests or did you see any horse shoecrabs?

Ms. Seitz said...

Sanjida: We didn't see any living horseshoe crabs. I think it's just a bit too late.
Tasfiya: It was an amazing year. And maybe one day this summer, we can go see the birds at the refuge, if you are around after Aug. 6. Let me know how that CD is and I'll see both of you tomorrow! Happy Graduation!

Hi, Ms. Seitz. I'd love to go to the refuge but I might not be avaible in August. We're not sure yet, but my family is planning to go to Bangladesh in August, since it will be after Ramadan. I'll let you know, because we haven't exactly confirmed that we're going.

It seems like everything is happening so fast! I mean, tomorrow's graduation and next thing you know, we're off to middle school! Seems scary yet exciting too..... I hope I can easily adjust to my new school since everything will seem so new after being at PS 230 for seven years. Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow! Pretty nervous about my speech, but it'll be an amazing and very memorable day!

P.S. Happy graduation to you too! Because you'll be graduating from PS 230 with us too! :)

I can't believe today was our last day at PS 230. I'll always cherish the memories I've made cause they're what makes me smile. Especially now. I miss everybody, all my friends and teachers (you the most Ms. Seitz) and just attending this school. And I'm glad I was able to take that picture with you on my tablet Ms. Seitz! It's a good thing I was able to do it at the last minute.

It'd be nice if some of my friends went to Christa. The only friend I have there so far is Jenny who was in Ms. Redmond's class this year but I might not see her so often because she isn't in the same academy. I'm in Scientific Research but I think she's doing Business and Law. Either that or Arts and Humanities.

I hope everybody was pleased with their report card and they have a great summer and best of luck in September! What are you guys doing this summer? Have any plans for vacation, Ms. Seitz?

I miss everybody! Bye! :)

Love, Tasfiya

Hey Ms.Seitz!I found out the name of the hotel we'll be in when we visit Niagara Falls. Its called Marriott Hotel.I am starting tuition for the summer this week.I am reading a book called What your sixth grader needs to know during summer to study. The science part is so interesting.I have learned about Alfred Wegener,Continental Drift, Plate Tectonics, Pangaea, and the layers of Earth.About a week ago or maybe 2 weeks ago, my little brother broke his arm and now he has a plaster.I feel so bad for him.I started fasting today.I felt fine in the morning but now I feel so hungry. My mom cooked so many things I find myself drooling when I think about it.She cooked roast chicken legs with potatoes and for dessert she made fruit custard with jelly.I made lemonade and I can not wait for 8:33!Right now its 7:52.Bye!

Hey Ms. Seitz. Today's the second day of Ramadan! I'm going to try my best to fast ALL 30 days. I always feel fine in the morning and start to get a little hungry at about 5 in the afternoon and hungrier when I see my mom cooking! She makes this Indian/Bengali dish called Haleem and its my favorite! It's really good and she only makes it during Ramadan.

Anyways, I'm really excited for middle school. I went on inside schools.org to see the review on my middle school because I thought middle school would be REALLY hard but in the comments all the students and parents seemed to love it! They said it was no pressure and I'm also interested in the programs. The kids in my academy get to go on trips like hospitals to learn more about medical things. They also do robotics and take apart computers to learn about engineering and then put them back together. The school website said that kids work with animals and hold them, like geckos, cockatiels, and parakeets! So I might get to hold a bird, which has been a dear wish of mine. :) I'm also pretty excited to work in the science lab. Bye!

Hi Sarah and Tasfiya: Nice to hear from you and proud of you fasting for Ramadan. It takes a lot of willpower! Sarah, enjoy the trip to Niagara Falls. I remember going there as a little girl! And I'm glad you are both exciting about middle school. I just came back from Day One of a 4-day teacher program that I'll be using at my new school. It's a great program with lots of practical, useful teaching tips. Also, hanging out with lots of teachers and sharing resources. The program is called the Responsive Classroom. I have to be brief because I just came home after sitting in almost 2 hours of traffic. Wiped out!

Hi, Ms. Seitz! I got a letter from my middle school yesterday in the mail. I am going to be in class 601. I wonder how my teacher will be like? They also assigned us summer homework so I'm getting started on those. I have to write a lot about the four books they assigned us. In elementary school, I really wanted to have a binder so I was excited for middle school but my school doesn't use binders for all three years, only notebooks and folders like before. But I think it's for the best. My brother said he didn't like binders because it made his book bag really heavy when he carried it around so his shoulders used to hurt from carrying them in school and when he went on the subway to go to and come home from school. I'm gonna go to the library later maybe sometime this week to get the books for the homework and I'm gonna borrow some bird books as well! And I'm glad you're enjoying the program! Is the program something that only your new school was part of to talk about teaching in September or is it just a program that new teachers to any school participate in that you decide to join if you want to share and get some extra tips? Sorry if I wasn't clear because it's kinda hard for me to explain what I mean. Bye! :)

P.S. I didn't check up on the bird cams lately, but I did yesterday and guess what? Kaloakulua the baby albatross fledged on June 24! Also, the third hawk baby was injured a day after it fledged and it injured it's wing! But now, thankfully it is alright.

P.P.S. I miss you!

2 hours of traffic!?That really does need a rest.My Mexican Sunflower has bloomed!I'll send you a pic of it Ms.Seitz!I was so excited yesterday because I got to talk to all my cousins in Pakistan from my Mom's side on Skype.

Sarah: That is so wonderful! I definitely want to see the flower. I think you are the only one whose Mexican Sunflower survived. Girls, how are your Venus Fly Traps doing? Some of my traps are turning black so I'm researching why. I think I need to give it a little more light. And yippee for your trip to Bangladesh Tasfiya. I would love to travel to that part of the world one day. Tell me what books they want you to read for sixth grade? I'm curious. So exciting to be getting ready for September already. You can do a lot of reading on the plane. The program I'm attending isn't for all teachers. It's for schools who want to follow the Responsive Classroom philosophy. The school I'm going to uses the program throughout the school so there is consistency in the way teachers deal with student learning, behavior and social and emotional support. It's very good and sets students up for success. And I've met some teachers I'll be working with and they are so nice so that is also exciting. Talk to you both soon.
