Tasfiya just gave me an update on some of the cams I've written about in earlier posts. According to Tasfiya, Kaloakulua, the Hawaiian albatross, fledged on June 24. That is about 148 days after hatching. Kaloakulua will now spend the next
3-5 years traveling the open oceans before returning to land.
And one of the three baby hawks at Cornell was injured after it fledged on June 14. While resting on a nearby greenhouse, it's wing was caught when an automatic vent opened up. The hawk has had surgery and is doing well.
If you want to check out some other cams, click here. This site is featuring, among other animals, a snowy owl and her six chicks nesting in Alaska. What's nice about Alaska is during summer the sun doesn't set until some time after 11 pm so there's plenty of time to check in on the chicks.

Hi, Ms. Seitz! I'm definitely going to check out the snowy owls! Anyways, from your last comment, my Venus Fly Trap was doing okay but then about three of the traps started to turn black. I didn't know why, so I was a little worried. It had enough light and was moist all the time like you said. So I searched "Venus Fly Trap Care" and turns out it was turning black because I was using tap water to keep them wet! I learned that it wasn't good for them because it had minerals in it and it was clean, chlorinated water which makes it good for humans. I was curious as to why that affected it so I did more research. The Venus fly trap actually adjusted to living in poor conditions since it lived in swamps so it couldn't have any good water. Howevefd, it said that if you had nothing to use but tap water, you have to take the cup of water away from under the Venus fly trap and leave the cup of tap water just sitting around for 24-48 hours. Somehow the minerals and chlorine would be gone from the water and then, you could use it to keep the Venus Fly Trap wet. So now, it's fine. But the three traps that turned black became totally black so I snipped them off like you said to do at UNC.
Anyways, I just got back from the library to get my books but I didn't find any because people borrowed them for assignments. There were 7 holds! And since you asked, they assigned us the following books:
1. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
2. Boy by Roald Dahl
3. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis.
4. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
Even though I didn't get any of the books at the library, I was able to get the first and third book because I had a friend in 7th grade who goes to Christa and she had those two books for assignments when she went to 6th grade. So since she didn't need those two she let me keep them, so I'm very thankful for that. I'm still gonna place a hold on the other two books and hopefully get them in one or two weeks.
We also got our tickets for Bangladesh today. We are actually going to be leaving on August 10 in stead of the 8th. Bad thing is we're coming back on September 10, so since school starts on the 4th, I'll be absent for 5 days because the 4th is a Thursday. My mom said she's gonna work it out with the school so it's okay. We're taking this chance or else we can't go for another 3 years since I'll have studying for the SHSAT in 7th grade and my brother will have studying for the SAT starting this September because he's going to 11th grade. Good thing is I can still check up on the blog because I have internet at our house in Bangladesh. :) I'm so so happy to be seeing all my family. I miss them a lot because we haven't seen them in 3 years. I have a balcony in my room in Bangladesh so I'll be watching out for LOTS of birds and taking pics! :) Bye! Talk to you soon!
Sorry i havent commented in a looong time but this post finally came i check the bird today because i havent seen it in a long time. Ms seitz are you going on vacation ?
Just found e3 i think its the owl but he was hurt an accident happened and cornell doesnt why or ho!
Sanjida, E3 is actually the third hawk baby and like Ms. Seitz wrote, it fledged on June 14 but on June 15 he was resting on the roof of a greenhouse and his wing got stuck when the vent came up. The hawk had surgery on its wing and is doing well after the accident. :) I just love how Cornell really cares for animals and the birds and try to help them as best as they can! The people at the lab are amazing! :)
Hope you enjoy your trip to Bangladesh Tasfiya. One of my Venus Fly traps also became black.I found out the same reason for the v.f.t. when i searched up Venus Fly Trap care. The Google search theme is so cute for July 4.Brooklyn Prospect homework is mostly done on google docs and they give you your own gmail account for school. You have to sign in to Edmodo which is a site for teachers and students to connect with their work and you can comment each other's essays and reports. We had to get a laptop from Best Buys for my older brother Harris because most of his work had to be done on a laptop and that is why he got one for his birthday.Sometimes I feel like that he feels more grown-up with that laptop or something because he keeps a password on it and he likes it when I ask him to log in because I want to use it sometimes.Anyways, I bought this American Girl book called "A smart girl's guide to Middle school".I read a few pages of it and it is very useful. There is this part called Taking the seat and it gives you suggestions on where to sit when you enter a class. They say that sitting next to a window can distract you during class because you might find yourself looking outside and not paying attention and it gives you tips on how to make new friends and how to juggle more teachers and more homework and the guide encourages you to get involved in after school programs.I have two after school programs I want to be in: The Green Club and the Brooklyn Prospecter Team. The green club is a club in which you can work on the beds they have at the school. The Brooklyn Prospecter is the school newspaper. They make the newspaper online. You should check it out.Its awesome!Bye Ms.Seitz!See ya later.
I'm so excited for July 10th! Only two more days until my birthday! In our religion we don't celebrate birthdays but it still makes me feel like I'm growing up! I'm pretty sure today, July 8th is Estrella's birthday. Bye! Talk to you soon! :)
