NOW'S THE TIME!

As some of you know, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology up in Ithaca, New York has been featuring two bird cams on their website--one is in Ontario, Canada and the other is in Ithaca, NY. The cameras are focused on bird feeders in their area. I was just checking on them when I noticed another cam up and running. This cam is also in Ithaca and is focused on two red-tailed hawks that have just started building their nest on a pole on the Cornell University campus. Keep watching and you may see the female, Big Red, lay her eggs. She usually begins egg laying in early March.
Big Red

If you want to learn more about this pair of hawks (they mate for life!), Cornell has more than 60 questions and answers about the couple. Just click here: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/Page.aspx?pid=2607.

Hi, Ms. Seitz! I checked up on your blog about 20 minutes ago, and didn't see a new post yet, but now, I checked up and saw this! I've known about the cam for a while now, but when I looked at it in the past (like 2 months ago) there was nothing, so I left it alone for awhile. Then, I saw the news on the website how Big Red and Ezra were building their nest. I even saw the videos that said they were starting to build their nest together! :) Unfortunately, I don't get to see them whenever I check up on the cams... Did you see them yet? Plus, I started to think about what I wanted to be when I grow up. I have a lot of fun researching birds, so I really want to be an ornithologist. It seems like a good job for me since I love birds, but we'll see. Also, I googled their salary and the results were that they got 150,000 dollars every year! That's a lot of money! Plus, I'm going to do more research on why the Pochards are endangered, cause I'm really curious. I'll feature them in the next issue of The Daily Tweeter! :) I'm also gonna include a "sign p sheet" for those who want to be guest writers for the newspaper. :)

Also, I believe I heard a red tailed hawk around my block today!! I listened with the window wide open, and it matched the song of the red tailed hawk on the Cornell website! I was so excited! :)

Apparently, Cornell website has ALOT of different bird cams.. One for the Ospreys, Great Blue Herons, etc. They even had a cam for American Kestrels! But, unfortunately that cam is off now. It would be amazing to watch Kestrels... :)

Hi Ms.Seitz!Occasionally I would come to this blog.I was just a little busy reading a book by Christopher Paolini. It is called Eragon. It is a goal I have to finish the book.It is 590 pages long.Anyways it wold be great to see the bird cams you have. There are lots of pigeons around Brookyn.I feed them bread.Last summer I realized that one of the pigeons kept coming to my windowsill. So as soon as the pigeon got used to me, I reached out my hand slowly and for the first time in my whole entire life I let the pigeon peck on my hand.I used to be afraid of birds pecking on me.Now I am not.And then I named the pigeon. His name is Mudd.I put a tag on him so I know who he is.He is not around now a days.I know he will come back.I think.Sometimes I think he found a mate.I have not seen other birds.Well, goodbye!See you on Friday!:)

Wow this is amazing! Brilliant! A redtailed hawk was put a cage in "Esperzana Rising" the book we are reading it said that redtails stay near mountains? Is that true, I can't remember! Oh by the way how am suppose to send you pictures?

Where is this place?

Wow, my fourth comment. I keep writing too much because I forget to share things in my other comments that I really wanted to say. But, I agree with Sanjida, how do we send pics? A few weeks ago, I tried sending you a photo of a bird by copy pasting it here but it didn't work. Also, this morning when my dad was driving me to school, he stopped at a red light and then, some white birds got scared and flew away. There was a whole flock of these birds, but one of them dropped food from its mouth when flying and the food went on my dad's windshield.(He wiped it off later) So, when I got home I wanted to find out what bird I saw. So I searched up birds in Brooklyn and a whole list came up. When I was in the car, my dad and I figured they were seagulls because they looked like the ones we see in Coney Island Beach. On the list of birds, it showed seagulls and I was right, I did see a seagull. But I doubted myself. I was like "No way," because I never saw them on the streets, only at beaches. So I did more research and found out they wer seagulls and sometimes, you'll find them in the streets in Brooklyn. :)

P.S. the seagull had a BIG piece of food from the ground, so it looked all smushed, and weird on our windowsill... and kinda disgusting... :)

You guys are all amazing! I love how you are loving birds. Hasib:I'm impressed how you are feeding the birds in your yard. That's great. And Tasfiya, I like how you are always looking out for new species and also listening for birds. Sarah, I'm glad you love reading. I love the story of how you finally let a bird peck you. As you see, they are not out to hurt you. It's great to feel the peck of a birds. Sanjida, did you check out the hawk cam yet? And yes, I did see the two of them working on their nest. There are definitely red-tailed hawks working on their nests in Prospect Park right now!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Thanks Ms. Seitz! :) I didn't even think about how red tailed hawks are making their nest in Brooklyn right now! Will we go birding again someday? It would be fun if we saw hawks in the park working on their nest! And you are so lucky to see the hawks on the cams! I went to the link that had questions about cams, and it said that Big Red was named in honor of Cornell University and that Ezra was named in honor of Ezra Cornell, the founder of Cornell University! Also, Sarah's story about Mudd is making me want to feed pigeons and having one get used to me. Plus, I think I spotted a nest in a tree in my backyard this morning but I saw no birds. Also, there was this big cat in my backyard that was REALLY fat. It was a stray. I kept looking out my window because I never saw such a big cat! It was grey and white so I named it Rusty. I also saw another stray white and black cat that often visits my yard. It even climbed the BBQ grill we had! I recognized the cat from last month, when my dad was putting out the garbage,a chicken bone fell out (it still had some meat on it but not much) and the black and white cat was sitting there and started eating the meat! It finished everything and even bit the bone a little. So, I decided to name it Bone. :)

P.S. A few days ago, on the Ontario can, I heard a Cedar Waxwing singing its song! Somebody even wrote a comment about it. It was amazing because I never heard or saw one and they are my favorite birds! :)

Hi, Ms. Seitz. I just finished working on the third issue of "The Daily Tweeter." It took me an hour to complete it because I had to gather information, and make the newspaper look organized, neat, etc. This issue of the paper talks about red- tailed hawks, and Big Red and Ezra. After writing about them, I included a short paragraph about the sign- up sheet attached to the paper. It's for whoever wants to be writers for the newspaper. Well, see you on Friday! :)

Ms. Seitz said...

Hi Sarah: Yes it was fun running into you in Foodtown and seeing your family. Why don't you start keeping a nature journal. I think you'd like that!
Tasfiya: I can't wait to see the new issue of the Daily Tweeter. I only have one copy. Did I know see the other issue? I'd like to write, of course, and maybe Ms. Friedman would too. Do you have a specific topic in mind, or should I just "wing it!"

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Hi, Ms. Seitz. Sorry for the late reply. Plus, you can choose any topic you want to write about! On my sign up sheet (you don't have to sign up, you can write whenever you want) I put a section for the persons name and their favorite bird, and just 3 sentences or more about their favorite bird. If I'm stuck between most of them, and not sure who to pick, I'll draw names from a hat or basket or something! :) Today we learned about Pete Seeger, he sang the song This land is my land, although Woody Guthrie made the song. Pete died yesterday after being in the hospital for 6 days. He could not talk for the last three days. He died in the evening yesterday, at age 94. Also, I'm stuck on what topic I should pick for a article our class is writing. I REALLY want to do Birds of Paradise, and the Holocaus
t! But, Birds of Paradise seem like better topic for me rather than the Holocaust. Yet I'm still Linda stuck. I'd have more fun researching birds of paradise, don't you think so, Ms. Seitz? Anyways, I don't want to put tragic pics in my article if I do the Holocaust. :( Its just such a sad event..... Well see you on Friday!

Hi, ms.seitz, I left school early today because of a bad stomachache. I am feeling a bit better. So, about the hawk cam .... What do you mean? Oh, by the way, in class we are doing feature articles, I might be doing it on pigeons! I missed the assembly for Chinese New Year. :( See you on Friday ( I hope)!
P.S. Happy Chinese New Year!

Hi, Ms. Seitz! I was kinda excited today because during dismissal, Ms. Friedman and I saw an American Kestrel!!! Also, when I was home, my brother pointed out these black birds in my backyard. There were four of them, and when I went to look out my window, I recognized the birds as Dark Eyed Juncos!! I was really excited, because I don't often see many birds around my house, so seeing some birds rather than seagulls, pigeons, etc, it was nice to see some different birds. :)Also, today at the Chinese New Year Assembly, it was really fun! Many people got to touch the big, white lion, and everyybody in class was pushing to get to the lion. It was fun! I got to touch the lion too.. :) Well, see you on Friday! I'll bring the Daily Tweeter when we see you in class next time! :)

Hi Ms.Seitz!I think I will make a nature journal. So far I put the feathers of Mudd on to the page with tape.I put labels on them.I put an arrow on the wing feather and the tail feather.I heard that some male birds do a little dance with their wings to attract female birds.Wow!I never knew that.I am going to do some research on it and write it in the nature journal you told me to do.I will also do research on the trees and birds that fascinate me.I will write that in my nature journal too.Do you think that was a good start?Tell me later.Tootles!See u on Friday!:)

Sarah: I'm so glad Mudd is back! And yes, what you are doing in your nature journal is perfect. Keep it up and we'll talk, okay? Also I love when you say "toodles!"

Ms. Seitz said...

Sanjida: Sorry you weren't feeling well. I didn't get to see the Chinese New Year performance either...had to teach! I think writing about pigeons is a great idea. If you need any help or extra info, let me know. They are actually pretty interesting birds.

Tasfiya: I love how Ms. Friedman and Ms. Shuckman told you guys about Pete Seeger. He was an amazing man, a staunch environmentalist beside all the music he did.
And I can't believe you and Ms. Friendman saw an American Kestral. Where was it?
I am going to think about what I want to write about for the Daily Tweeter this weekend, so stay tuned.
