Hey, Ms. Seitz! Just wanted to check up on the blog and saw this new post! I have to say, the rubric clearly states what you need on the project, because then I can work on getting 4 in all the categories. I'm printing out pics for my poster, and just spreading them out to see what my poster might look like. You are so lucky because you're a good drawer Ms. Seitz! On the rhino poster you made, the drawings you did were really pretty!!!! Yours really stood out! I wish I made it! :) Anyways, I am really nervous for tomorrow, because we are getting our report cards! I'm always terrified because I really wanna do well! Plus, I'm starting to write in my UNC journal when I can spare some time. I haven't written in it for a while, cause I've had a lot of things going on. But I can't wait for the next UNC meet next week!

P.S. We missed you in class on Friday! Sarah said you had to attend a meeting. Also, I like the bear pic you added with this post! :)

P.P.S. Have you seen the albatross can lately? Kaloakulua stood up for the first time! Plus, he spent some time with two Red Crested Cardinals! Also, an unbanded hawk came to Big Red and Ezra's nest!! :)

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Also, I have a question about the Rubric. To get a 4 in the Conservation section, do you HAVE to have 3 ways to protect it? Because my animal only has two... :(

Ms. Seitz said...

I would prefer three Tasfiya....keep looking. If I check I only find two, then it's okay, but if I find three......well......
Don't worry about your report card. You are a hardworking, conscientious student. I'm sure your report card will reflect this!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Thanks, Ms. Seitz. And I'll keep looking for other conservation groups! I wanna get a really good grade on this project! :)

Tasfiya Kashem said...

I am so relieved now, Ms. Seitz! I finally found a third conservation group, called ABC. THANK YOU for including the rubric!! Or else, I wouldn't be so clear on what your expectations are for this project, Ms. Seitz! Plus, I never knew there were other cardinals species besides Northern Cardinals. After watching Kaloakulua with the two Red Crested Cardinals, I knew that there were other cardinal species! :)

Sarah Awan said...

Hi Ms.Seitz!I agree with Tasfiya. The rubric is very helpful. Is the app that you were talking about the one that is advertised on the website allaboutbirds.org.I was also kind of worried about my report card.I feel better now because I got satisfying grades. Also, where is the New York Hall of Science? Maybe I could visit it sometime. If its about science, my parents would agree to go there.I agree with you.My brother is pretty silly. :)

Hasib Patwary said...

ms.seitz how do you do a research report im confused i kind of don't know how to do a research report

Tasfiya Kashem said...

That is the bird app I was talking about, the one Sarah said! Its called Merlin Bird ID! :) I heard the New York Hall of Science has a science playground for kids!! I also agree with Sarah about the report card thing. My parents were really happy with the scores I got. :)

Ms. Seitz said...

Hasib: I showed you an example of the research report in class. If you want to come by and see it again, just stop in.

Girls: No I got another app. I'll show it to you, okay. Sarah: I got your note about not finding all the info you need. What is your animal again?

Sarah Awan said...

Hi Ms.Seitz!I can not wait until my mom gets to talk to you at the meeting! She is going to like you.You are a really great teacher. My animal is the Cuban Crocodile.Sometimes, when I am trying to find information on the report it says:UNKNOWN.I asked Ms.Truss to help me find a book about Cuban Crocodiles or maybe just about crocodiles.Maybe on the weekends I can go online and find the address of New York Hall of Science. This reminds me about the Horseshoe crab trip.Too bad we could not go.The weather is really good today.I live really close to school so I don't need to hurry.Anyways, see you in the meeting!!!GoodBye!!Good luck on your meetings guys!!

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Thank you ms.seitz for letting me change my project the rubric is very helpful. But I dont think kids are really going to bother paying attention to the rubric. My mom couldnt talk to you. :( I wanted to write a comment yesterday but i didnt have time also I forgot what I wanted to say. I will let you know my question when I..... REMEMBER! Okay? Thanks for everything

Sarah Awan said...

Hi Ms.Seitz! Did you get my note?:)Today we had an assembly. It was really awesome. There were four performers. Were you there?I was looking for you but I could not find you.I only saw Ms.Rubens.By the way, the paper that you put on the table on parent teacher conference day was really helpful. Now, I have an idea of what I could put in my nature journal that I just started.I work on it everyday after school.I am printing some pictures of the birds and trees I want to write about. For example, the Golden-Cheeked Warbler.I got your note. Thanks because I can find more info. Now I can get that pressure off my shoulders.Phew! The weather is getting a little better. There is this man named Steve and he teaches our class a bunch of things about fish.Later on, we are going to Prospect Park to do some fishing!Do you know how to fish?I bet you do.Good Bye!!See you on Friday!!!:) :) :)

Hey, Ms. Seitz. :) Can't wait for UNC! There's only....... 5 days left! I found this area in one of our Scholastic magazines, where it said that the Kakapo, which is a rare bird, is the second ugliest animal in the world!! I don't understand that, because when I looked at the Kakapo for the first time, it wasn't ugly! It is a giant nocturnal parrot that is really rare! Well, I guess people have different opinions.... I'll show you that piece on Friday. Anyways, today (like Sarah said), a native american group came to school, and they sung songs, dances, and told stories. One of the stories included Ms. Brill who had to play the beautiful woman in a story called the Love Flute. The name of the group was Red Hawk. They even had eagle feathers in their headdresses.... I kinda felt ambivalent about the eagle feathers in their headdress. I know that they wear it because of their culture and stuff, but I also feel bad. Don't you have to kill the eagle to get the feathers?? :( Anyways, my mom really likes you. :) She said you make a really good teacher, and that it was nice talking to you! :) Plus, I have a SPECIAL EDITION of The Daily Tweeter coming up! This time, it will be longer! Only three people wanted to be writers for it so I chose them. I'll tell you who they are. :) Also, I hope you will really like this next one coming up!!

Sanjida I Afrose said...

I am not sure how to make a poster!

Sanjida I Afrose said...

ms seitz are you busy on friday during lunch if you arent do you mind if i stay so you can help me?

Tasfiya Kashem said...

I wasn't planning to write right now, but I just had to! An unbanded adult came to the nest, and is now sleeping on Kaloakulua's nest!!!! Kaloakulua obviously doesn't enjoy the non breeders, so he left the nest, and is wandering around somewhere, but we dont know where. Isn't that albatross "invading their territory" Ms. Seitz? Because, a Laysan Albatross's territory starts from a foot away from the nest, but now the non breeder has been napping in the nest for the whole day! :O

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Never mind about the lunch thing ms.seitz. Its already to late... TASFIYA, mind if i ask you something, i wanted to know did you see this at the Cornell Lab cam? Can you let me know where you found this out & were you found it?

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Sanjida, why don't you just click on the link Ms. Seitz had on the previous post? :)

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Thanks

Tasfiya Kashem said...

UPDATE: Kaloakulua still can't get the nest back. He tried to reclaim it, but the non breedeer won't come out. He's built his own little nest on the grass, but I can tell he wants the comfort of his old nest again... :( Poor guy.. I wish his parents would come back and take care of him....

Ms. Seitz said...

Tasfiya: I will definitely check out the nest in the morning. This sounds crazy. Are any people talking about it on the cam page? By the way, I did see the Native American show with the fourth graders. I really liked it. They were good!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Hey, Ms. Seitz. Yes, people are talking about it on the cam page. However, the non breeder left the nest when Kaluahine came back to feed Kaloakulua. So, he got the nest back! He took a little nap on the nest, and then, went back to the small nest he built on the grass. Anyways, I've been working on my project this whole weekend. I printed everything out, and just need to paste them on the poster now. My mom is helping me make it look attractive. :) I hope I get a good grade. :)

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Ms.Seitz this project is going great. I can wait til I finished with the posting and details my mom is also helping me!

Sanjida I Afrose said...

hi ms.seitz i cant find another way to find the blue bird of ... it endangered. i have a question. what are those 2 curled things at the end of the blue bird of paradise's tail

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Sanjida, those are two, long, ribbon-like tail feathers..

Ms. Seitz said...

They use those tail feathers in their courtship dance.

Hi Ms.Seitz!Something really cool happened. When we were lining up to go back to our class,Ms.Schuckman said that there was a surprise upstairs.I became really jumpy. What could it possibly be?Then she said that Ms. Friedman's grandson and daughter were upstairs! It was so exciting.Ms.Friedman always talked about her grandson. When we entered the room, we saw the cute baby.He was so cute!He had chubby cheeks and a cute small body. His name was Jackson but we called him Jack.Great name. His mom was named Kate.Kate told Jack ,"What does a lion say?".Jack said a low and cute roar.Babies are so cute!I love baby fat!It is so squishy!Gujjy Gujjy.Sorry.:)I'm in my baby mood.I am adding last touches to my science project.I can not wait to show you my project.Hope I get a good grade.Bye!!See you on Friday!!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Oh yeah, Jack was so cute today! He is cuter in person than in the pictures Ms. Friedman showed us. Ms. Friedman let him sit on her rolling chair, and out of nowhere, he said "Meow.." Everybody started saying awwwww, and laughing. And I agree, his little roar was the cutest!! He calls Ms. Friedman "Mimi." When Kate asked Jack if he could show his nose, eyebrows, ears, or mouth, he always said no in the cutest way, as if he didn't have any of those body parts. :) When he made a sheep's sound, it was also a low, grumbling "Baaaa". He is the cutest baby I've ever seen!! He even calls the computer, Byuja. Oh, and how can I forget! He gave his mother a fist bump, and he gave Ms. Friedman a high five! Best surprise ever! Everybody has wanted to meet Jackson before! :)

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Jackson is adorable ms.schuckman said he would start crying if he was overwhelmed. He is so cuuute! He made animal imitations and some many other things. Ms.Friedman, said he "can fix the overhead" he "used the computer" Anyways, I am almost done with the science project. I hope I get a good grade. :-)

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Ms.Seitz, does the Blue Bird of Paradise migrate? Even if it does migrate, when time of year does it leave and when does it come back? Anyone answer as soon as possible!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Sanjida, it doesn't migrate, because Papua, New Guinea doesn't get cold like it does for us here.

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Thank you! You helped me a lot.

Ms. Seitz said...

Sounds like Jackson was quite the guest! Lucky you guys. Also, don't worry. I'm sure your projects will be great. I've starting reading some from other classes....I have so many to read, but I am learning a lot. This is going to take me a while, but I'll be learning the whole time! See you tomorrow.

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Sanjida, your welcome. :)

Hi, Ms. Seitz. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to check up on the bird cams lately. Had a lot of things to do. I'm also wanting to write a book, so I'm writing new chapters on my laptop whenever I get the chance. I hope it turns out to be good. :) After learning about captive breeding last Friday, I've been interested in searching up some videos about it. I saw one about an animal called the White Abalone. Well, see you tomorrow.

Sarah Awan said...

Hi Ms.Seitz!I am so excited today!Today is my brother's birthday.Harris's birthday.I can't wait till he wakes up.(he is still sleeping)Yesterday we went to Best Buys and he got to buy whatever he wanted. So lucky.Trust me, I have siblings and shopping with them is terrible! You have to watch them all day going from this part of the shop to the other.(that must be why I had such a great sleep:))Anyways my brother bought his own laptop!I can not believe it!He is only in sixth grade. My mom said she would watch out for it.She wants to make sure we don't go to other websites and things while we are suppose to study and work with it.For example; when I needed my dad's laptop for my science project.Today we are going to have cake and decorations.Yay!What are you doing for the weekend?Anything exciting? I love that song by Demi Lavato called Let it go.I am so in to it.Bye!! See ya later Alligator!!!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Hey, Ms. Seitz... Just went on Yahoo News, and they said that there was a big oil spill that threatens bird migration. :( More info on that later....

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Oh gosh, since I've been so occupied with the albatrosses, I forgot to check out the hawks! And guess what? Big Red laid her first egg on the 19th! Better start checking up on them too.. :)
P.S. She's watching her egg right now!

Ms. Seitz said...

Sarah: Wow, Harris is a lucky guy! Happy birthday to Harris! And Tasfiya. You are writing a book? What kind of book? I must know! I also checked the CAMS this morning and saw the red tail on the nest too. Quite exciting. So many birds to watch!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Hi, Ms. Seitz. :) It's gonna be fiction, but sometimes I have to erase things and make it sound good, but it'll take a while. :) I hope to finish it before fifth grade is over. It's about a girl named Camden that lives in a rural area. She and her two friends, Frederica (Fritzie) and Charlotte go out to play in the forest one day, when they hear two men arguing, so the three of them hide. One of the men is holding a heavy, big rock and is going to drop it on himself. Then, he plans to blame it on the other man, who soon gets arrested. Turns out, the arrested man is Camden's father, who had a disagreement with his worker (the one holding the rock). Now, Camden and her friends have to help her dad and prove that her father never hurt his worker. I don't know how I though of this.... I just wrote the intro, and the idea just popped into my head! :) I try to work on it whenever I get the chance. Plus, I have been watching this YouTube channel, called Peekaboo Parrots since Friday. It shows videos about a woman's four pets. She has three birds, Bowie, and Smokey + Koolaid (the last two are mates.) And her dog,Pai Mei. Bowie is the funniest bird! He is a Lutino Indian Ringneck. Smokey and Koolaid are Pacific Parrotlets, and she even shows their kids. Today is Bowie's fifth birthday. :) He says: Hi, Tickle-tickle, Bye, Cmon, Peekaboo, Woo, Be Quiet, What's that, What are you doing, and "Hi Koolaid How Are You?" His laugh sounds like Elmo. Koolaid talks two, and he LOVES tissues. He plays with them and gets very territorial if anybody tries to get near his tissues. He started the peekaboo game, but he he never says one or two. He always skips to three. :) He is SO adorable! When I'm old enough, I wanna get a Dilute Blue Pacific Parrotlet. (That's what type of bird Smokey is). :) I just love watching those three birds!

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Hey, ms.seitz this weekend is pretty boring did you see my 3-d poster yet? i hope i get a good grade!

Ms. Seitz said...

Wow that is intense Tasfiya! And Sanjida, no, I didn't look at it yet. I was afraid to carry it home because I didn't want to damage that beautiful nest. I will look at it some time this week during my lunch or after school. I look forward to reading it!

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Thanks for the complement and take your time no hurries( I sound like a grown up) :)

Ms. Seitz said...

You do sound grown up Sanjida!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Hi, Ms. Seitz. Thanks about the story thing. After UNC today, I searched up the Mexican sunflower, by its botanical name Tithonia. I remembered how you thought it was one of Shakespeare's plays, but weren't sure, so I searched "Tithonia Shakespeare's play." Turns out, it was actually a character from Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and her name was Titania. It does sound confusing. Tithonia, Titania. :) I told my mom about the daffodils, so she said she would find a different pot to hold them. She really liked the pics of daffodils I showed her. One of the first questions she asked was, "Do squirrels dig them up?" because I told her a long time ago that they dig up tulip bulbs. Since you gave us two daffodil bulbs, I'm gonna plant one of them normally, and the other upside down, since it still grew for you. Plus, I have a dream to travel the whole world when I grow up, and keep a journal of the different birds I see. :)

Sarah Awan said...

Hi Ms.Seitz!I just had a really good idea that I think all the UNC members should do.I wanted to keep a record of one of my daffodil bulbs that you gave me so I made a chart so that on one of the side says day and the other says measurement.I measure it every day after school.I will show it to you sometime.Have you read any reports yet?Did you get to read mine? How is it going with the projects?Bye!!!See ya on Friday!!

Ms. Seitz said...

Sarah: I love the measurement idea. Sounds great. Hopefully the daffodils will bloom. Like I said they didn't get their "cold time," which is required. But we'll see. It's a science experiment! And yes, I am reading lots and lots of projects. Whew! Exhausting....but very interesting. I'm actually learning a lot. No, didn't read yours yet. Soon, soon.
Tasfiya: Good idea planting the daffodils two different ways. Make sure you keep data on them. And the world traveler idea is great. I LOVE traveling. I want to go to South America and see all the birds that migrate and live there. Really colorful birds. I even found a teacher program that I could apply to do that, but my family wants me to travel with them this summer. Maybe when the boys are in college, I can go birding somewhere exotic. I don't think my family would want to look for birds as much as I would. See you both Friday!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Hi, Ms. Seitz. I will keep data on the daffodils. I didn't get the chance to plant them yet, so my mom said we might plant them on the weekend. I tell my mom what I am learning about planting at UNC, so we're both learning about gardening now. :) She started planting peas indoors a week ago, and some of the seed leaves are now growing. One of the plants still is attached to the seed as it is growing. I told my mom about how you transfer the plants from indoors to outdoors, and how you have to leave it outside so it will adjust to the weather and stuff. Anyways, I also wanna see South America's birds! I also wanna visit the Utcubamba Valley in Peru, because I'd like to try and see the Marvellous Spatuletail, the bird I did for my endangered species project. And, maybe a trip to Papua, New Guinea to see Birds of Paradise (I don't know if I'll be lucky enough, but a girl can dream) :). I would also LOVE to see the Quetzel! It is BEE-YOO-TI-FUL! Well, see you Friday. :)

Sanjida I Afrose said...

Hi ms.seitz i couldnt find 2 more ways the bird is protected.

Ms. Seitz said...

Sanjida: I did some research and there are other things....for example, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has the Birds of Paradise Project. The goal of the project is to advance knowledge and promote conservation through exploration, research, and education focused on the birds-of-paradise. Also, biologists and conservationists at the Papua New Guinea Institute of Biological Research conduct research on birds of paradise and were featured in a NATURE show called "Birds of the Gods." Go to http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/birds-of-the-gods/video-blue-bird-of-paradise/6275/ and check out a clip.

Ms. Seitz said...

Don't be worried about the test. Just relax, breathe, and read carefully. I'm off to Washington DC for the weekend. My niece is at George Washington University. We're visiting her. Have a good weekend everyone!

Tasfiya Kashem said...

Have a good time at DC Ms. Seitz! Fill me in on any birdciting news!

P.S. Where did my comment before this go? :o

I went to DC 2 years ago, and it was awesome! :) I loved seeing the White House. Oh yeah, Sarah, it is Office Playground. I got it wrong by mistake. Did you see the hummingbird toy? By the way, I heard that a snowy owl got hit by a bus in DC and needs surgery now. Anyways, hope you are having a wonderful time in Washington DC Ms. Seitz! See any birds there? :)

UPDATE: Kaloakulua is growing some of his adult plumage.

UPDATE: Big Red laid her second egg on the 22nd and her third egg on the 25th! There are some highlights from the video of Big Red laying the third egg.

P.S. I finished two chapters of my book so far :)

Sarah: Just so you know, there are two more new videos of Bowie, since you said you were interested in the woman (Joanne's) videos. :) One of them is his fifth birthday, and the other one is where he was 'taunting' Pai Mei with food. :)

Ms. Seitz said...

Sabiha: Yes, you can revise and always write out the words instead of using WWF or any other abbreviation. I would love to have it on USB. I'll copy it to my computer and return your USB.

And don't worry all you great students.....stay relaxed and just make sure you read carefully. And then reread your answers. Just take it easy....this too shall pass. I'm sending you all some good testing karma........Catch it!
